Storage Furniture

Storage furniture is indispensable in a prosperous economy for various household goods, such as clothing and fabrics, food, kitchen utensils, crockery etc. During the Turkish occupation (1640-1898), when the Cretan countryside was plunged into poverty, most items of this kind were no longer necessary. Eventually the furniture of the Venetian period wore out and was not replaced. Many families, for example, stored their clothing and fabrics in storage pots, which were much cheaper than wardrobes. Apart from chests and cupboards, which are found in every house, very few other pieces of storage furniture have survived in Crete.
