Traditional Cretan Pottery
Laina (Jug)
Laina (jug). A Margarites-type jug with slip decoration. It doe not have the special properties of the jug from Thrapsano.
Laini (jug). Small jug with a narrow mouth found in eastern Crete.
Bouhlitsa (jug). A rare type of jug with a very narrow mouth, possibly copying Aegean forms. Found in eastern Crete.
Okadaki. A jug for water or wine, often glazed on the inside, from eastern Crete. Its name is derived from its similarity to measuring vessels (an oka is a measure of volume: 1,280 kg). The shape is reminiscent of medieval jugs.
Ladiko (oil flask)
Kanata (jug). Measuring jug for liquids, independent of its special weight. Small spout on the rim. Also called a mouzouraki, oka or okadaki.
Leaded kanataki (small jug). Late 17th century. A small glazed table vessel in light yellow and green.
