Fishing

Fishing is classed under the heading of gathering from the natural environment, but it is a skill requiring special knowledge and tools, that of the farmer or herdsman.

Fish were rare in Crete and available only to coastal residents, due to the lack of transport and preservation methods. During the 700 years of foreign occupation, Cretans were only allowed to build small boats, and thus coastal catches were scanty as to fish numbers and species. The most used equipment included woven traps, nets, hooks and tridents.
